The ALETHEIA Series

Positioning Filipinos as Thought Leaders in Global Discussions

Since its establishment, Aletheia Publishing has encountered several authors and scholars, both new and established, with outstanding manuscripts, translations, research outputs, and other collections of works that have remained unpublished due to the bureaucratic and financial challenges in having their works considered by commercial and university-based publishers. This is mainly because the traditional publishing business model tends to favor genres or subjects with the potential to achieve mainstream popularity or be adopted as required reading in the school system  in other words, books likely to achieve bestseller status and generate significant sales. While this approach makes economic sense, it often reduces publication budgets for less commercially viable or niche subjects such as history, philosophy, sciences, and literary fiction. Moreover, manuscripts written in languages other than English or Tagalog, the primary languages of the publishing capital, Manila, are rarely considered, disproportionately disadvantaging non-Tagalog-speaking authors and scholars from Visayas and Mindanao and from other regions in the Philippines located outside the publishing capital.

The ALETHEIA Series, which comprises the Aletheia Philosophy SeriesAletheia Theology Series, and Aletheia Literary Series, are new initiatives that were launched last 2021 to achieve these interrelated goals:

(1) To establish an alternative venue, other than university presses and journals, that is dedicated to promoting peer-reviewed works of Filipino writers and thinkers;

(2) To promote the literary and academic outputs of our own Filipino writers and scholars, particularly (though not exclusively) those whose voices are outside the capital city of Manila.

(3) To cultivate a nationwide appreciation of these distinct local and regional works and, most importantly, advance their readership to an international audience.

Simply put, The Aletheia Series seeks to expand the publishing field for Filipino writers, thinkers, and scholars—positioning them as thought leaders in their respective disciplines as they engage with global discussions and scholarship.

Here are the updated titles as of January 2025.

Category: Philosophy; Poetry in Filipino
Availability: In Print (Order Here)

About the Book:
– mula kay Dr. Joyce Arriola, University of Sto. Tomas

Finalist, 40th NBDB National Book Awards (Philosophy Category)

"In this vital collection of essays, Paolo Bolaños affords new insights into Nietzsche’s often complex yet profound ideas. Novel interpretations of Nietzsche’s metaphysics, epistemology, politics, and ethics are clearly and sagaciously presented, clarified, and defended. The most significant value of the volume, however, is its ability to bring Nietzsche into a fruitful and provocative conversation with the philosophical Canon. The result is a rich, diverse work that will pay dividends for scholars working in the scholarship for years to come.” – from Hans-Georg Moeller, University of Macau

Finalist, 41st NBDB National Book Awards (Novel in Binisaya Category)

This novel is a coming-of-age story set in the small Davao town of New Tubigon, where a young man, Gabriel "Gabby" Gomez, is awakened to face the many challenges of adulthood. His experiences highlight his realization of his family's and neighborhood's problems, the challenges involving Moro and Lumad people, and the acceptance that life has two faces – life and death, joy and pain. Set from April 1962 to March 1963, against the backdrop of Communist Cuba and the Vietnam War, Morante's novel will remind you of how significant the difference was at that time compared to the present. As readers follow the events in Gabby's and the residents of New Tubigon's lives, when the problems of land grabbing, class struggle, and environmental violations rise, it is clear what the future of the country and the entire world will become. Gabby and his friends will leave not only their youth but also their innocence as two seasons collide: planting and harvesting, laughter and mourning, greeting and saying goodbye.
