Defying her grandmother, Pining elopes with law student Daniel dela Cruz to Davao City – an act she would feel guilty about till the end of her life. When war broke out, Daniel battled underground with guerrillas until he was caught and executed by Japanese soldiers, leaving Pining a young widow. While fleeing Davao City to the rural area of Tibungko, Pining met another suitor, Miguel Salvador. They decide to marry and after the war, the couple returned to the city and raised a family. They lived in various places of southern Mindanao, encountering Moro and Lumad communities. During the Martial Law era, Pining and Miguel were drawn to resist authoritarianism as their children Barang, Dadong, Ellen and Kaloy (who serves as the book’s narrator) grew up and became activists in college. As she assisted nuns in Task Force Detainees, Pining became a surrogate mother to many imprisoned young activists until her health eventually failed and was diagnosed with cancer. Pining’s final days were marked by a reckoning of past events while searching for reconciliation and redemption.

About the Book:
– mula kay Dr. Joyce Arriola, University of Sto. Tomas

Set from April 1962 to March 1963, against the backdrop of Communist Cuba and the Vietnam War, Morante's novel will remind you of how significant the difference was at that time compared to the present. As readers follow the events in Gabby's and the residents of New Tubigon's lives, when the problems of land grabbing, class struggle, and environmental violations rise, it is clear what the future of the country and the entire world will become. Gabby and his friends will leave not only their youth, but also their innocence as two seasons collide: planting and harvesting, laughter and mourning, greeting and saying goodbye.
